Rooted and Grounded in Love

Opening Reflection

Have you ever felt like you know about God’s love but don’t truly feel it?

You can recite John 3:16. You can sing “Jesus Loves Me.” You believe it in your head. But deep down, there’s a quiet whisper that says, “Yes, but does He love me — really? With all my failures, all my doubts, all the ways I fall short?”

That whisper is the difference between knowing about love and being rooted and grounded in it.

Devotional

Paul’s prayer in Ephesians 3 is remarkable. He’s not asking for the Ephesians to have more faith, more knowledge, or more power. He asks for them to be rooted and grounded in love.

These are two powerful images. A tree sends down deep roots to draw nourishment and stand firm against the wind. A building is grounded on a foundation that holds it steady through every storm. Together, they paint a picture of stability that comes from being secure in God’s love.

But why would Paul pray for believers to be strengthened to comprehend love? Shouldn’t love be the easiest thing to understand?

The truth is, receiving love — really receiving it without earning it, without deserving it, without performing for it — takes more strength than almost anything else we do. Our default mode is striving. We want to earn what we desperately need. We want to prove we are worthy of love. And when we fail to earn it, we assume we have lost it.

Jesus told a story that captures this perfectly — the parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15). A son demanded his inheritance early, wasted everything, and hit rock bottom. He prepared a speech: “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants.”

But while he was still far off, the father saw him and ran to him. Not walked. Ran. Before the son could finish his rehearsed apology, the father threw his arms around him, put a robe on his back, a ring on his finger, and sandals on his feet. He didn’t say, “Prove yourself first.” He didn’t say, “Earn your way back.” He said, “This son of mine was dead and is alive again.”

That is the love Paul is praying you would know. A love that runs toward you before you can clean yourself up. A love that restores you before you can earn your way back. A love that celebrates your return before you can finish your apology.

You have never earned God’s love — and you never will. It has always been a gift of grace.

Paul describes this love with four dimensions:

  • How wide? Wide enough to cover every mistake, every failure, every sin you have ever committed. Wider than the east is from the west.
  • How long? Long enough to reach from eternity past, before you were born, into eternity future, beyond your last breath. It never runs out.
  • How high? High enough to lift you from the deepest pit, the darkest depression, the most impossible situation. Nothing is too high for His love to reach.
  • How deep? Deep enough to reach you in your lowest moment, your most secret shame, your most hidden wound. There is no place you can go that His love cannot find you.

And this love “surpasses knowledge.” Your mind will never fully comprehend it. You cannot study your way into it, logic your way into it, or earn your way into it. You can only receive it. And when you do, you are “filled with all the fullness of God.”

This is the foundation beneath the foundation. Before you can obey, you must know you are loved. Before you can stand firm, you must be rooted in love. Before you can bear fruit, you must be grounded in grace.

Practical Application

  • Spend five minutes today not asking God for anything — simply sitting in His presence and receiving His love.
  • When you feel the urge to perform for God’s approval, pause and whisper: “I don’t have to earn what I already have.”
  • Write down one lie you’ve believed about God’s love for you. Find a Scripture that directly counters it and write that truth beside it.

Breath Prayer

Breathe in: “Your love never fails.”
Breathe out: “I am rooted in You.”

Closing Reflection

You do not need to earn God’s love today. You already have all of it — every drop, every dimension. The question is not whether He loves you enough. The question is whether you will stop long enough to receive it. Let today be the day you stop knowing about His love and start being rooted and grounded in it.

The love that surpasses knowledge is not reserved for better Christians. It is yours, right now, just as you are.

You have never earned God’s love — and you never will. It has always been a gift of grace.

Prayer

Father, I confess that I often know about Your love more than I truly know it. Strengthen me today to comprehend how wide, how long, how high, and how deep Your love really is. Help me stop striving to earn what You have already given freely. Let the story of the prodigal son remind me that You are the Father who runs toward me before I can clean myself up. Root me and ground me in Your love until I am filled with all Your fullness. In Jesus’ name, amen.

  2. Which dimension of God’s love (width, length, height, depth) speaks most to where you are right now? Why?
  3. The prodigal son’s father ran toward him while he was still far off. Where in your life do you need to stop trying to clean yourself up and simply let the Father run to you?
