Seen in the Wilderness

Theme Scripture: Genesis 16:13 (WEB)

Reflection

She called the name of Yahweh who spoke to her, ‘You are a God who sees,’ for she said, ‘Have I even stayed alive after seeing him?’

Hagar’s story is one of the loneliest in all the Bible. She was an Egyptian servant, given to Abram and Sarai when they could not have a child. When she conceived, the household turned against her, and Sarai treated her harshly. So Hagar did the only thing she could think of. She ran.

She ran into the wilderness, away from the tents, away from the people, away from any hope of being treated fairly. She was a woman without status, without protection, and in her own mind, without a future.

And there, in the middle of nowhere, God found her. He did not wait for her to return and put things right. He did not require her to be respectable first. He came to her where she was, and He called her by name: ‘Hagar, Sarai’s servant, where did you come from? Where are you going?’

Hagar’s answer is one of the most honest sentences in Scripture. She does not pretend to be brave. She does not offer an explanation. She simply says where she has come from and admits that she is running. And God meets her there, with a promise and a future she had not asked for.

Then Hagar does something remarkable. She gives God a name. ‘You are a God who sees.’ However desolate that wilderness was, it became the place where she discovered that she was not invisible to Him.

That is where this week begins. Before we look at God’s provision, His goodness or His holiness, we begin with His eyes on us. Not the crowd. Not the impressive. Not the ones who have everything together. The one who is running, alone and overlooked.

You may be in a wilderness of your own right now, a season where you feel unseen, unthanked or simply forgotten. Hagar’s discovery belongs to you as well. The God who spoke to her has not stopped looking. He sees you, and being seen by Him is where everything else begins.

Closing Prayer

Father, there are days when I feel invisible, as though my life and my struggles go unnoticed. Thank You that You are the God who sees. Meet me where I am, as You met Hagar in the wilderness, and help me to live as someone who is fully known and fully loved. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Gentle Encouragement

You are not invisible to God. He sees you where you are, not only where you are going.
