Following the Good Shepherd

WALKING WITH JESUS • DAY 14

Following the Good Shepherd

Main Scripture: John 10:27 (WEB)

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.”

— John 10:27 (WEB)

Opening Reflection

There is something deeply comforting about being known. Not just known in the casual sense — someone who knows your name or your face — but known in the way a shepherd knows each sheep. The shepherd doesn’t see a flock. He sees individuals. He knows which one tends to wander. He knows which one is timid, which one is strong, which one limps slightly. He knows them, and they know his voice.

In a world that often makes us feel anonymous — just another face in the crowd, another name on a list — Jesus offers something different. He says, “I know them.” Not “I know about them.” Not “I recognise the group.” He knows you. And He calls you to follow.

Devotional

The image of God as Shepherd runs throughout Scripture. David sang, “Yahweh is my shepherd; I shall lack nothing” (Psalm 23:1). Isaiah promised that God “will feed his flock like a shepherd. He will gather the lambs in his arms” (Isaiah 40:11). And Jesus, standing before the religious leaders of His day, made the boldest claim of all: “I am the good shepherd” (John 10:11).

What makes a good shepherd? In Jesus’ time, shepherds lived with their sheep. They led them to pasture. They protected them from predators. They searched for them when they strayed. They didn’t drive the sheep from behind — they walked ahead, and the sheep followed because they trusted the voice that called them.

This is our picture of discipleship. Following Jesus is not about knowing a set of rules or performing religious duties. It is about listening to a voice and choosing to walk behind the One who goes before us. The Shepherd does not push us toward green pastures — He leads us there. He does not drive us through the valley of the shadow — He walks with us through it.

Walking with Jesus begins not with trying harder, but with learning to stay close to the Shepherd who is already leading the way. To tune out the noise of the world, the demands of the day, the clamour of anxiety, and the voices that tell you you are not enough. And in the quiet, to recognise the one voice that has always known you and has always called you by name.

Practical Application

• Spend ten minutes in silence today. No music, no phone, no distractions. Simply sit quietly and ask the Shepherd to make His voice known to you.

• Read Psalm 23 slowly. Read it as though you are the sheep He is speaking about. Underline every promise He makes.

• Identify one “other voice” that has been competing for your attention lately — fear, doubt, comparison, busyness — and ask yourself: does this voice lead me toward the Shepherd or away from Him?

Breath Prayer

Shepherd of my soul, I am listening. Help me to hear Your voice above all others and to follow where You lead.

Closing Reflection

You are not lost in the crowd. The Good Shepherd knows your name, your struggles, your fears, and your hopes. And He is not driving you from behind — He is going before you, clearing the path, preparing the way. The question is not whether He is speaking. The question is whether we are listening.

Prayer

Good Shepherd, thank You that I am not just a face in the crowd. You know me. You call me by name. Teach me to recognise Your voice in the noise of daily life. Give me the courage to follow where You lead, even when the path is unclear. I trust that You go before me, and I will follow. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Reflection Questions

1. What does it mean to you personally that Jesus knows you — not just knows about you, but truly knows you?

2. Which “other voices” have been loudest in your life recently, and how can you turn down the volume to hear the Shepherd more clearly?

3. Is there an area of your life where you are resisting following Jesus? What would it look like to take one small step of trust today?
