WALKING WITH JESUS • DAY 20
Walking in His Strength
Main Scripture: Isaiah 40:31 (WEB)
“But those who wait for Yahweh will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings as eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.”
— Isaiah 40:31 (WEB)
Opening Reflection
Walking with Jesus is a marathon, not a sprint. But there are days when even putting one foot in front of the other feels impossible. The path is steep. The journey is long. The weight of life presses down, and you wonder if you have the strength to take another step.
If that is where you are today, this devotional is for you. Because the good news of the gospel is not that God expects you to be strong. It is that He offers you His strength when yours runs out.
Isaiah wrote these words to a people who were exhausted, exiled, and discouraged. They had been waiting for God to act, and He seemed silent. And into their weariness, God spoke a promise: renewed strength for those who wait on Him.
Devotional
The Hebrew word for ‘wait’ here is qavah. It does not mean passive waiting — sitting around doing nothing until something happens. It means actively hoping, eagerly expecting, twisting yourself like a rope around the One you are waiting for. It is the posture of someone who knows that their strength is not within themselves but comes from outside themselves.
When we wait on the Lord in this way, something happens. We do not simply endure the waiting period. We are renewed. The promise is not just survival — it is soaring. ‘They will mount up with wings as eagles.’ God does not just give us enough strength to limp through. He gives us strength to rise above.
Notice the progression in this verse. First, they mount up with wings as eagles — a burst of renewed energy. Then they run and are not weary — sustained strength for the race. And finally, they walk and do not faint — steady perseverance for the long journey.
Wherever you are in your walk today — whether you need eagle’s wings to rise above a trial, stamina to keep running, or simply the strength to put one foot in front of the other — God promises to provide exactly what you need. Not because you have waited perfectly, but because He is faithful to those who hope in Him.
The strength for this journey does not come from within you. It comes from the One who walks beside you. And He never grows weary. When your strength is gone, His faithfulness remains. You never walk alone.
Practical Application
• Take a moment to honestly assess your energy level. Are you running on your own strength or His? If you are weary, bring that weariness to the Lord and ask Him to renew you.
• Spend five minutes in silence, consciously waiting on the Lord. Do not ask for anything. Simply sit in His presence and trust that He is at work even when you cannot see it.
• Write down one promise from Scripture that speaks to your current weariness. Keep it where you will see it throughout the day.
Breath Prayer
Lord, I am weary. I wait for You. Renew my strength and help me to walk today in Your power, not my own.
Closing Reflection
You do not need to have enough strength for the whole journey. You only need enough for this one step. And the One who walks with you promises to provide that strength — not all at once, but moment by moment, step by step, grace upon grace.
Prayer
Father, I confess that I have been trying to walk in my own strength, and I am tired. Today I choose to wait on You. I tie my heart to Yours and trust that You will renew my strength. Lift me up where I need to soar. Sustain me where I need to run. And give me steady perseverance for the long walk ahead. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Reflection Questions
1. What area of your life has been draining your strength? Have you been carrying it alone?
2. What does ‘waiting on the Lord’ look like practically in your current season of life?
3. When have you experienced God renewing your strength in an unexpected way? What did that teach you about His faithfulness?
