Finishing Well

Opening Reflection
We have walked together through twenty devotionals. We have learned about resting in God’s peace. We have built our foundation on the Rock. We have been rooted in Christ’s love. We have abided in the Vine. We have stood firm, renewed our minds, put on the armour, borne fruit, and been built together. We have followed the Shepherd, learned His voice, walked by faith, cast our cares, learned contentment, found joy in obedience, and received strength for the journey.
And now we arrive at the final day of this series. The destination Paul describes with such confidence: finishing well.
Not everyone finishes well. Many start with passion but fade over time. The journey is longer than they expected. The battles are harder. The detours are many. But Paul, at the end of his life, looks back and says three things: I have fought. I have finished. I have kept.
Devotional
Paul wrote these words from a Roman dungeon. He knew his execution was near. He had every reason to be bitter, discouraged, or afraid. But instead, he wrote words of triumph. Not triumph over his circumstances, but triumph in Christ.
I have fought the good fight. The Christian life is a battle — not against people, but against the spiritual forces that oppose God’s purposes. Paul did not shy away from the fight. He engaged it faithfully, not in his own strength, but in the strength of the One who had called him.
I have finished the course. Life is a race with a specific course marked out for each of us. Paul did not compare his course to anyone else’s. He did not quit halfway. He ran the race set before him and finished it with faithfulness.
I have kept the faith. The most important of all. Through every trial, every hardship, every disappointment, every joy, Paul held onto the faith. Not a perfect faith. Not a faith that never had questions. But a faith that never let go of Jesus.
And then he looks forward. ‘The crown of righteousness is stored up for me.’ Paul was not earning his salvation through good works. He was looking forward to the reward that grace itself promises to those who persevere. And he adds: ‘not to me only, but also to all those who have loved His appearing.’ That includes you.
Finishing well is not about being perfect. It is about not giving up. Each faithful step, no matter how small, is precious to the God who walks with you. It is about keeping your eyes on Jesus, taking the next step, trusting Him one day at a time, and knowing that the One who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus (Philippians 1:6).
You can finish well. Not because you are strong enough, but because He who walks with you is faithful.
Practical Application
• Take time to reflect on your spiritual journey so far. Write down one way God has been faithful to you through this series. Thank Him for it.
• Identify one area where you are tempted to give up. Commit it to the Lord and ask Him for the perseverance to finish well.
• Read Hebrews 12:1–3. Fix your eyes on Jesus — the author and perfecter of your faith. He did not give up on you, and He will give you the strength not to give up either.
Breath Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You that You who began this good work in me will carry it to completion. Help me to finish well.
Closing Reflection
The walk with Jesus does not end here. Today is just one step in a journey that will last a lifetime — and beyond. But every faithful step, every act of trust, every moment of obedience is leading you toward that great Day when you will hear the words your heart longs to hear: ‘Well done, good and faithful servant.’ Keep walking. Keep trusting. Keep following. The finish line is worth it.
Prayer
Father, I want to finish well. I want to look back at the end of my life and say, with Paul, that I have fought, I have finished, I have kept the faith. But I know I cannot do this in my own strength. I need Your grace every step of the way. Keep me faithful. Keep me steady. When I grow weary, renew my strength. When I am tempted to give up, remind me of the prize that awaits. And until that final day, help me to keep walking with Jesus. In His precious name, amen.

2. What is the biggest challenge you face in persevering with your faith, and how can God help you overcome it?
3. If you could hear Jesus say ‘well done, good and faithful servant’ about one area of your life, what would it be? Is there a step you can take today toward that?
