LIVING BY THE SPIRIT — DAY 22
Living by the Spirit
Main Scripture: Galatians 5:25 (WEB)
“If we live by the Spirit, let’s also walk by the Spirit.”
— Galatians 5:25 (WEB)
Opening Reflection
Have you ever tried to live the Christian life in your own strength? You read the Bible, you pray, you try to do the right things — and yet something feels off.
The apostle Paul draws a beautiful distinction in Galatians 5. He says we already live by the Spirit — if we are in Christ, the Spirit of God dwells in us. The question is not whether we have the Spirit, but whether we are walking by the Spirit. Life is the gift. Walking is the daily choice.
Devotional
“If we live by the Spirit, let’s also walk by the Spirit.” — Galatians 5:25
There are two verbs in this verse, and their relationship is everything. “Live” speaks of the source of our spiritual life. It is the same word Paul uses in Romans 8: “You are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if the Spirit of God dwells in you” (Romans 8:9).
But “walk” is different. The Greek word Paul uses here carries the sense of walking in a straight line, keeping step, marching in rank. It implies alignment, discipline, and movement in the same direction.
Here is the liberating truth: you do not need to earn the Spirit’s presence in your life. You already live by the Spirit. The Spirit is not a reward for good behaviour — He is the very breath of your new life in Christ. But you are called to walk in step with Him. Not to try harder, but to surrender more. Not to strive, but to yield.
Think of a child learning to walk with a parent. The child does not need to earn the right to be held. The parent’s arms are already there. But the child must choose to hold the parent’s hand, to match the parent’s pace, to trust the parent’s direction.
When you walk by the Spirit, you begin to notice a difference. The things that once drained you begin to flow. The choices that once felt impossible become natural. Not because you have finally mastered the Christian life, but because you are no longer living it alone.
The key is daily surrender. Each morning, you have a choice: will you walk in your own strength, or will you walk by the Spirit? The Spirit is not shouting for your attention. He is gently leading, quietly guiding, patiently waiting for you to take His hand and walk.
Every small act of obedience is another step in learning to walk closely with Him. He is patient, faithful, and delights to lead those who are willing to follow.
Practical Application
- Begin each morning this week with a simple prayer: “Holy Spirit, I yield this day to You. Lead me, guide me, and help me walk in step with You.”
- When you face a decision today, pause before acting and ask: “What does the Spirit want me to do here?”
- At the end of the day, reflect on one moment when you walked by the Spirit and one moment when you walked in your own strength.
Breath Prayer
Breathe in: “Holy Spirit, I live by You.”
Breathe out: “Teach me to walk with You.”
Closing Reflection
You were never meant to live the Christian life alone. The Spirit who raised Christ from the dead lives in you. He is not a distant force but a present Companion, a gentle Guide, a constant Helper. Today, take His hand and walk.
Prayer
Father, thank You for the gift of Your Spirit. I confess that I often try to live the Christian life in my own strength, and I grow weary and frustrated. Today I choose to walk by Your Spirit. Lead me, guide me, and help me keep in step with You. Not my will, but Yours. Not my strength, but Yours. I trust You to produce in me what I cannot produce on my own. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Reflection Questions
- In what areas of your life are you still trying to live in your own strength rather than walking by the Spirit?
- What would change in your daily routine if you consciously yielded each moment to the Holy Spirit?
- Think of a time when you sensed the Spirit’s leading. How did you respond, and what did you learn?
