Listening to the Holy Spirit

Opening Reflection

Have you ever wished God would speak to you in an audible voice? Many of us long for the kind of certainty that would silence every question and settle every doubt.

But God has not left us without guidance. He has given us something even more intimate than an audible voice: the indwelling Holy Spirit, who speaks not always in thunder, but often in a still, small whisper.

Devotional

Jesus promised that the Spirit of truth would guide us into all truth. The Spirit who inspired the Scriptures is the same Spirit who lives in you, and He is actively working to guide you into the full reality of who God is and who you are in Christ.

But here is the challenge: listening requires stillness. The Spirit does not typically shout over the noise of our lives. He speaks through Scripture, through prayer, through circumstances, through the counsel of other believers, and through that quiet inner prompting that aligns with God’s Word.

Learning to recognise His voice is usually a journey rather than a single moment. As we spend time in God’s Word, prayer, and fellowship with other believers, our hearts become more sensitive to His leading.

First, through Scripture. The Spirit will never lead you in a way that contradicts the Word He inspired. Test every prompting against Scripture.

Second, through deep inner conviction. This is not a vague feeling but a settled assurance that grows as you walk with God.

Third, through open and closed doors. Opportunities that align with God’s will tend to open in His timing. Obstacles may be the Spirit’s loving redirection.

Learning to listen is a skill developed over time. It begins with a simple prayer: “Speak, Lord, Your servant is listening.”

Practical Application

  • Set aside 10 minutes today in complete silence before the Lord. Ask the Spirit to speak, and simply listen.
  • Before making any decision today, pause and ask: “Spirit of truth, what do You want me to know?”
  • Memorise John 16:13 this week.

Breathe out: “Guide me into all truth.”

The Spirit is not silent. He is speaking — through the Word, through prayer, through that quiet inner prompting that aligns with the heart of God. The question is not whether God is speaking, but whether we are listening.

Holy Spirit, thank You that You are not distant or silent. Forgive me for the times I have been too busy to listen. Teach me to be still. Train my ears to recognise Your voice. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
