This is one of the most beloved passages in Scripture, and for good reason. It captures something primal and honest about the human soul — a thirst that cannot be denied.
The deer doesn’t have to be taught to thirst for water. It’s instinct. When the deer is dehydrated, every fiber of its being drives it toward the stream. It doesn’t settle for a sip from a puddle. It needs the brook — living, flowing, life-giving water.
The psalmist is honest enough to admit that his soul is the same way. But notice something important: this isn’t a casual observation. The Hebrew word translated “pants” or “longs” suggests a desperate, continuous, eager reaching. This isn’t a mild preference for God. It’s a life-or-death craving.
Holy dissatisfaction. That’s what we’re talking about today.
In our first journey, we learned the disciplines of the faith — prayer, abiding, trust, perseverance. But now we’re not just learning about the water. We’re thirsting for it. There’s a difference between knowing where the water is and needing it with every part of your being.
If you find yourself unsatisfied with your current spiritual state, don’t panic. Don’t feel guilty. That dissatisfaction may be the most spiritual thing about you right now. It means the Holy Spirit is stirring within you, creating a hunger that only God can fill.
Too many of us try to quench spiritual thirst with spiritual snacks — a quick Bible verse here, a worship song there, a Sunday sermon that we forget by Monday. But the soul needs the brook. It needs depth. It needs time. It needs the “living God” — not just facts about God.
The question the psalmist asks — “When shall I come and appear before God?” — reveals the direction of his longing. He doesn’t just want more of God’s blessings. He wants God Himself. He wants to be in God’s presence.
That is the thirst this journey is designed to cultivate. Not guilt about not praying enough — but a genuine, growing desire to be with the One who made you and loves you. When that thirst takes hold, everything changes.
