Theme Scripture: Romans 12:18 (WEB)
Reflection
If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men.
This verse is one of the most honest and freeing instructions in Scripture. Paul does not command us to achieve peace with everyone. He commands us to pursue it — as much as it depends on us.
There is a distinction here that changes everything. Forgiveness is always our responsibility. Regardless of what someone has done, we are called to release the debt, to let go of bitterness, and to forgive from the heart. That is a command, not a suggestion.
But reconciliation — the restoration of a broken relationship — is not always within our control. It requires the willing participation of the other person. You can be ready to reconcile, extend an open hand, and pray for healing, but you cannot force someone else to meet you there.
Paul acknowledges this reality. If it is possible… — because sometimes it is not. As much as it depends on you… — because the other person’s response is not your responsibility.
This frees you from a terrible burden. You do not have to fix every relationship. You do not have to carry the guilt when someone refuses to make things right. Your part is to forgive, to pursue peace, to leave the door open. Their part is between them and God.
But notice: Paul does not give us an easy out. He says as much as it is up to you — meaning we must examine our own hearts honestly. Have you done everything you can? Have you let go of the grudge? Have you extended grace? Have you removed the barriers on your side? Are you holding onto bitterness even as you say you have forgiven?
This is where the hard work happens. It is easy to say “I forgive them” while secretly hoping they suffer consequences. It is easy to declare peace while nursing resentment in private. Paul calls us beyond that. He asks us to examine ourselves honestly and do the work of clearing our own side of the road.
If you have done that — truly, honestly — then you are free. You have done your part. The outcome belongs to God.
Living in peace is not about controlling others. It is about stewarding your own heart well, forgiving freely, and trusting God with the rest.
Closing Prayer
Lord, I release the relationships I cannot fix into Your hands. Help me to forgive completely and to pursue peace as far as it depends on me. Where reconciliation is not possible, give me the grace to accept that and the wisdom to know the difference. Guard my heart from bitterness and fill it with Your peace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Gentle Encouragement
Forgiveness is always your responsibility. Reconciliation is not always within your control. Do your part, and trust God with the rest.
