A Light for Others
Scripture: Matthew 5:14–16 (WEB) — “You are the light of the world. A city located on a hill can’t be hidden. Neither do you light a lamp and put it under a measuring basket, but on a stand; and it shines to all who are in the house. Even so, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.”
Hope is not meant to be kept to yourself. When you have discovered something good — truly good — you naturally want to share it. A sunrise is not beautiful only for the person who sees it. It lights up the whole sky. And the hope we carry in Christ is not a private comfort. It is a light that was always meant to shine into the darkness around us.

Jesus does not say “you should become the light” or “try to be the light.” He says you are the light. This is an identity statement. If you are in Christ, light is not something you manufacture. It is something you are. Christ, the true Light, has taken up residence in you, and His light now shines through you.
A city on a hill cannot be hidden. It was not built to be invisible. It was built to be seen. In the same way, your faith was never meant to be a private matter. The hope you have in Christ is not a treasure to bury. It is a light to share. When you live with hope, people notice. They may not know what is different about you, but they see something. And that something is the light of Christ.

The lamp is lit to give light. It would be absurd to light a lamp and then cover it. But we do this sometimes with our faith. We receive the hope of Christ, but we keep it hidden — afraid of what others might think, uncertain how to share it, worried we might say the wrong thing. And slowly, the light that was meant to shine is covered by silence and fear.
Jesus invites us to put the lamp on a stand. Not to show off. Not to prove we are better than anyone else. Simply to let the light do what light does — push back darkness, reveal what is true, and guide those who are lost.
“Even so, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” — Matthew 5:16
Notice the goal. Your light shines not so that people will praise you, but so that they will glorify your Father. The purpose of our hope on display is not to draw attention to ourselves, but to point to the Source of all hope. When people see the way you endure hardship with peace, the way you love those who are hard to love, the way you keep trusting when circumstances fall apart — they are seeing something that cannot be explained by human strength alone. They are seeing the light of Christ.
Sharing hope does not require a platform or a pulpit. It happens in the ordinary moments of daily life. A kind word to a struggling coworker. A patient response to a difficult person. A quiet act of generosity. An honest conversation about what gives you strength when life is hard. These are the ways the light shines.
The hope you carry is not for you alone. It is a gift you have received, and it becomes even brighter when you share it. Every time you let someone see the hope that is in you, you are lifting the lamp out from under the basket. And the light that reaches them is not your own. It is the light of Christ, shining through you.
Breathe in: “I am the light of the world.”
Breathe out: “Let my hope point others to Christ.”
You do not need to have all the answers. You do not need to be perfect. You simply need to let the hope you have in Christ be visible. A life lived in the light cannot help but shine. And the darkest places are often where even a small light makes the biggest difference.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, You called me the light of the world, and I want to live up to that calling. Forgive me for the times I have hidden my hope — out of fear, out of uncertainty, or simply because I did not want to stand out. Today I ask for courage to let Your light shine through me. Use my words, my actions, and my life to point others to You. Let them see something in me that makes them want to know the Source of my hope. In Your name, Amen.
