Called to Be Like Him
Scripture: Romans 8:29 (WEB) — “For whom he foreknew, he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.”
Have you ever wondered what God’s ultimate purpose for your life is? Not your job, your ministry, or your calling — but the deeper purpose beneath all of it. Romans 8:29 gives us the answer with stunning clarity: God has predestined us to be conformed to the image of His Son.
This is the goal of everything. Every trial, every joy, every waiting season, every answered prayer — God is using it all to shape us into the likeness of Christ. Transformation is the fruit of intimacy. The closer we draw to Him, the more we become like Him.
“For whom he foreknew, he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son.” — Romans 8:29
The word “predestined” can feel daunting, but here it is filled with comfort. Before you ever took a step of faith, before you ever prayed a prayer, God had a destination in mind for your life — not a place, but a likeness. He destined you to look like Jesus.
“Conformed” is the Greek word symmorphos — to share the same form, to be shaped into the same pattern. It is the same root Paul uses in Philippians 3:10, where he speaks of “becoming like Him in His death.” This is not surface-level change. This is deep, fundamental transformation at the level of our character, our desires, our very being.
And the process has already begun. Paul does not say God will conform us. He uses the past tense: He predestined us. Before time began, the destination was set. Every moment since you came to Christ has been moving you toward this goal. The Spirit has been at work, sometimes gently, sometimes through fire, always shaping you into the image of Christ.
This changes how we see our struggles. When we face difficulty, we can ask not only “How do I get out of this?” but “How is this making me more like Jesus?” When we experience failure, we can ask not only “How do I fix this?” but “What is the Spirit teaching me through this?” Every circumstance becomes a classroom for Christlikeness.
Sometimes we only recognise the Spirit’s transforming work when we look back. The trials that once seemed meaningless often become the very places where Christ’s character was quietly formed within us.
The goal is not sinless perfection in this life — but it is genuine growth. The Spirit is patient, and He is persistent. He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion. And the finished product will be worth every moment of the process.
Breathe in: “I am predestined to be like Christ.”
Breathe out: “The Spirit is shaping me daily.”
God’s purpose for your life is not complicated. It is not a mystery you must decode. It is a Person you are becoming like. Every joy, every trial, every ordinary Tuesday is part of His plan to make you look more like Jesus. Trust the process. The One who began this work will finish it.
Prayer
Father, thank You that before I knew You, You had a purpose for my life — not a task to accomplish, but a likeness to grow into. I confess that I often lose sight of this goal. I get distracted by circumstances and discouraged by my failures. Today I fix my eyes on Jesus, the image I am being conformed to. Keep shaping me, keep transforming me, until I reflect Your Son more clearly. In His name, Amen.
