His Words in You

Theme Scripture: John 15:7 (WEB)

Reflection

If you remain in me, and my words remain in you, you will ask whatever you desire, and it will be done for you.

We have spent the last week learning to pray. We looked at persistence, at confidence, at listening, at praying without ceasing. And we ended where the disciples ended, with the simplest request of all: Lord, teach us to pray.

Before we move on, Jesus adds something that changes how we understand prayer altogether. He does not describe a method. He describes a place. If you remain in me, and my words remain in you, then you will ask. The asking comes last.

Notice the order. His words come first. Before the request there is the remaining. Before the answer there is the abiding. Prayer that moves heaven is not produced by technique or by volume. It grows out of a heart where the words of Jesus have taken root and stayed.

That is why Jesus said His words must remain in us. Not visit us. Not move us for an hour on a Sunday morning. Remain. The word that remains begins to shape what we want. It quietly rearranges our desires until the things we ask for are the things God has already promised.

Think about what that means for your own prayers. If His words are living in you, you will not spend your strength asking for things that would harm you. You will begin to ask for what He longs to give: a heart that forgives, a life that is honest, a love that does not give up, a peace that holds through a hard week.

So how do His words remain? The same way anything remains. They are received, kept, and returned to. Read them slowly. Carry one verse through your day. Say it back to God when you wake and when you lie down. Let it become the language your heart thinks in.

You do not have to choose between prayer and Scripture, as though one were the serious work and the other the preparation. They belong in the same place. His words in you, and your words back to Him. That is what a conversation with God has always looked like.

Closing Prayer

Lord, I want Your words to remain in me, not merely visit me. Quiet the noise that keeps them out, and teach me to carry them through my day. Shape what I want until my desires begin to match Yours, and let my prayers rise out of a heart that has been changed by what You have said. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Gentle Encouragement

Prayer is not a technique to master. It grows out of a heart where the words of Jesus have taken root and stayed.
