Theme Scripture: Romans 15:4 (WEB)
Reflection
For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that through perseverance and through encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.
Paul says something remarkable here. He says the older Scriptures were written for us. Every hard-won lesson, every psalm written in the dark, every story of failure and rescue, was written down for our learning, so that we would have hope.
That is worth sitting with for a moment. The Bible is not a museum. It is a library of comfort, assembled over centuries, for people who had not been born yet. For you.
Notice the two things Paul expects the Scriptures to give us: perseverance and encouragement. Not instant relief. Not a quick fix. Perseverance, which is the strength to keep going when nothing has changed. And encouragement, which is the courage to keep hoping while you do.
Those are the gifts we most need in the hard seasons, and they do not arrive out of nowhere. They come as we read. A psalm written by someone who survived a night like yours. A letter written to people under the same pressure. A promise spoken to someone who was also afraid.
Paul knew about hard seasons. He wrote this letter to a church he had never visited, and he wrote it while he could feel the cost of his own calling. He was not offering theory. He was telling them what had held him.
So if you are in a hard season, this is your invitation. Not to pretend. Not to rush to the happy part. Simply to open the Scriptures and let them do the patient work Paul describes. Read slowly. Look for the God who met people in their worst moments, and let Him meet you there too.
The word was written for you. It was gathered, guarded, and handed down through generations of people who could not see you, so that one day you would have this hope. Take it up. That is what it is for.
Closing Prayer
Father, thank You for a book that was written with me in mind. In the seasons when I have nothing left, let Your word give me perseverance and encouragement, and let it give me hope. Meet me in these pages as You have met Your people before me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Gentle Encouragement
The Scriptures were written so that you would have hope. Read them in the hard seasons, not only in the easy ones.
