Theme Scripture: Matthew 4:4 (WEB)
Reflection
But he answered, “It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.”
Jesus was hungry when He said this. Forty days in the wilderness, and the tempter came with bread. His answer was not that bread does not matter. It was that bread is not enough. There is a hunger underneath our hunger.
We know this, if we are honest. We can be full and still empty. Well fed and still starving for something we cannot name. We try to answer that hunger with more: more work, more approval, more comfort, more scrolling. It never quite settles.
Jesus says the soul is fed another way. By every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.
Notice the word every. Not one favourite verse, repeated when things go badly. Not a large helping once a week. Every word. This is a daily diet, not an occasional rescue.
That is what the manna in the desert was teaching. God gave Israel bread each morning, and it could not be stored. Yesterday’s supply would not feed today’s hunger. The same is true of the word. What you read last month will not carry you through this week.
The point is not that God is stingy with a weekly portion. It is that He wants to meet you every morning. Daily bread keeps the relationship daily. It keeps you coming back to the table instead of living on a memory of a meal you once enjoyed.
So come to the word the way you come to a table: regularly, unhurried, expecting to be fed. You do not need to read the whole Bible today. You need enough for today. A chapter. A paragraph. One verse, chewed slowly, is a meal.
You may not feel full straight away. Appetite takes time to rebuild, especially if you have been living on scraps. But keep coming. Keep setting the table. The bread is there, and the One who spoke it is not stingy with His children.
Closing Prayer
Father, I have tried to feed my soul on things that cannot satisfy. Give me an appetite for Your word again. Teach me to come to it daily, not for show but out of hunger, and to be content with enough for today. Feed me, and let me grow strong. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Gentle Encouragement
You are not fed once. You are fed daily. Come to the table today for what today needs.
