Theme Scripture: 1 Thessalonians 2:13 (WEB)
Reflection
For this cause we also thank God without ceasing, that, when you received from us the word of the message of God, you accepted it not as the word of men, but, as it is in truth, the word of God, which also works in you who believe.
Paul ends this thought with a phrase we should not read quickly. The word of God, which also works in you who believe. The word is not finished when it has been heard. It keeps working.
It is easy to treat the Bible as a message we receive and then file away. Paul treats it as a worker, as something that goes to work inside the person who believes it. Quietly. Over time. Whether or not you can see the results today.
The word behind the word ‘works’ carries the idea of active energy. Paul is describing a power that does not stay still.
This is what makes the difference between hearing a sermon and receiving it. Both ears can be filled. Only one heart is changed. The difference is belief: accepting it not as the word of men, but as it truly is, the word of God.
And here is the quiet comfort of it. The work does not depend on how well you are performing. If you have truly received His word, it is at work in you, shaping your responses, softening your edges, teaching you to notice people you used to walk past, giving you patience you did not have before.
Some days you will not feel any of that. That is what makes it a work rather than a feeling. Feelings come and go. The word carries on. Years from now you may notice that the person you have become looks like something the word has been quietly building all along.
So we end this week where the word always leads: not in a book, but in a life. What you have heard is not asking to be admired. It is asking to be believed, and then it goes to work. Give it your days, and let it do what only it can do.
Closing Prayer
Father, thank You for Your word, which does not sit idle in me. I believe it is Your word and not the word of men. Let it work in me quietly and deeply, shaping my heart, my habits and my responses, until the person I am becoming looks more like Jesus. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Gentle Encouragement
The word of God does not stop at your ears. Once it is received, it goes to work in the person who believes.
