Opening Reflection
Life often feels like walking through a darkened room. You cannot see everything at once. You cannot see what is around the corner or what lies ahead. But you do not need to see the whole room. You only need enough light to take the next step. That is what God’s Word does. It does not always show you the entire journey. But it gives you enough light for the step you are about to take.
Devotional
“Your word is a lamp to my feet.” — Psalm 119:105
A lamp in ancient times was a small clay vessel filled with oil, with a wick that produced a small flame. It did not light up the whole city. It did not even light up the whole room. It lit up just enough for the next step. You could not see far ahead. But you could see where to place your foot.
This is how God’s Word works in our lives. It does not answer every question. It does not reveal the entire future. But it gives you enough light for the step you need to take today. When you face a decision, Scripture provides principles to guide you. When you face temptation, Scripture gives you the truth to stand on. When you feel lost, Scripture reminds you of who God is and what He has promised.
“And a light for my path.” — Psalm 119:105
The lamp shows the next step. The light shows the general direction. Together, they keep you moving forward on the right path. You may not see the destination, but you can see well enough to keep walking.
Choosing God’s way means choosing to let His Word be your guide. It means opening the Scriptures not just for information, but for direction. It means reading with a heart that says: “Lord, show me what to do. Show me where to go. Your Word is the light I will follow.”
This does not mean every answer will be spelled out in black and white. Sometimes the Word gives a clear command. Other times it gives a principle that requires wisdom to apply. But it always gives enough light. The question is whether you will trust that light enough to take the next step.
There are moments when other lights seem brighter — the light of popular opinion, the light of your own desires, the light of what seems easiest. But these lights are deceptive. They may look bright, but they lead off the path. Only God’s Word is a reliable guide. It has never led anyone astray.
The path of wisdom is the path of choosing God’s Word as your guide. Not just on Sunday. Not just when life is hard. Every day. Every decision. Every step. His Word is enough. And when you walk by its light, you will never walk in darkness.
Breathe in: “Your Word is a lamp to my feet.”
Breathe out: “I will walk by its light today.”
You do not need to see far ahead. You only need to see the next step. God’s Word gives you that light. Trust it, follow it, and take the step. He will reveal the next one when the time comes.
Prayer
Lord, thank You that Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path. There is so much I do not know about the future, but I know enough to take the next step. Today I choose to walk by the light of Your Word. When other voices seem louder, help me to trust Your truth. When the path is unclear, let Your Word be the light I follow. Guide my steps and keep me on Your path. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
