Opening Reflection
Most of life is made up of ordinary moments. Not the big, dramatic decisions that change everything, but the small, everyday choices that fill the hours between morning and night. What to eat, how to speak to the people in your home, how to respond when someone cuts you off in traffic, how to spend the hour between meetings. Paul’s instruction in Colossians 3:17 takes these ordinary moments and fills them with eternal significance. Whatever you do — even the smallest thing — do it in the name of the Lord Jesus.
Devotional
“Whatever you do, in word or in deed.” — Colossians 3:17
Paul does not distinguish between sacred and secular. He does not say “in your spiritual activities” or “when you are at church.” He says whatever you do. Eating, working, talking, resting, serving, buying, selling, parenting, praying — all of it belongs to the Lord. There is no division between your spiritual life and your everyday life. All of life is spiritual.
This means that wisdom is not just for the big decisions. It is for the small ones too. What words you choose when you are tired. How you treat the person who serves you. What you do with the hour you did not expect to have free. These moments matter to God, and they require as much wisdom as the life-changing decisions.
“Do all in the name of the Lord Jesus.” — Colossians 3:17
To do something in the name of Jesus means to do it as His representative. It means acting in a way that honours Him, reflects His character, and carries His authority. Before you speak, ask: “Can I say this in the name of Jesus?” Before you act, ask: “Can I do this in the name of Jesus?” Before you spend, ask: “Can I spend this in the name of Jesus?”
This simple question cuts through confusion. If you cannot honestly do something in Jesus’ name, it is probably not the wise choice. If you can, then you have the freedom to move forward with confidence.
“Giving thanks to God the Father through him.” — Colossians 3:17
Gratitude is the atmosphere of a wise life. When you live with gratitude, you recognise that every good gift comes from God. The food on your table, the breath in your lungs, the people in your life, the work you have to do — all of it is grace. And when you approach your day with thanksgiving, even the ordinary moments become sacred.
Wisdom for everyday decisions is not complicated. It is simply learning to bring every part of your life under the lordship of Christ. It is asking, in every moment, “How can I honour Jesus in this?” It is living with the awareness that nothing is too small for His attention and nothing is too ordinary to be done for His glory.
The wise person does not live for the big moments. They live faithfully in the small ones, trusting that a life made up of thousands of faithful ordinary choices is a life that honours God.
Breathe in: “Whatever I do, I do in Jesus’ name.”
Breathe out: “I give thanks to God in every moment.”
Do not wait for the big moment to live wisely. The small decisions you make today — how you speak, how you serve, how you respond — are the building blocks of a wise life. Do them all in the name of Jesus. And let gratitude be the rhythm of your heart.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I want every part of my life to honour You — not just the big moments, but the ordinary ones too. Teach me to bring every word and every deed under Your lordship. Help me to pause before I speak and ask if my words honour You. Help me to act in ways that reflect Your love. Fill my heart with gratitude so that even the smallest tasks become acts of worship. Let my whole life be lived in Your name. Amen.
