Opening Reflection
Storms come. It is not a matter of if, but when. Every life faces rain, floods, and wind — seasons of difficulty that test everything we have built. Jesus does not promise His followers a storm-free life. He promises something better: a life that stands firm when the storm comes. The difference between a house that falls and a house that stands is not the storm. It is the foundation.
Devotional
“Everyone therefore who hears these words of mine and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on a rock.” — Matthew 7:24
Jesus draws a clear connection between hearing and doing. The wise person does not just listen to His words. They put them into practice. The rock is not hearing the teaching of Jesus. The rock is doing what He says. Many people hear the words of Jesus. Not everyone builds their life on them.
Building on the rock takes time and effort. It is not the quick or easy path. It requires digging deep, laying a foundation, and building carefully. In the same way, building your life on the words of Christ requires intentionality. It means reading His words, meditating on them, and — most importantly — doing them. It means making choices that align with His teaching even when those choices are costly.
“The rain came down, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it didn’t fall, for it was founded on the rock.” — Matthew 7:25
Notice that the storm came to both houses. Jesus does not say the wise man escaped the storm. The rain fell on his house too. The floods rose. The winds beat against it. But it did not fall. The storm revealed the strength of the foundation.
The storms of life test what we are really built on. When everything is steady, it is easy to assume our foundation is strong. But the true test comes when the ground shakes. When you face loss, disappointment, or uncertainty — what holds you up? If your foundation is the words of Christ, you will stand. Not because you are strong, but because the Rock is strong.
The foolish man built his house on sand (Matthew 7:26). Sand is easier to build on. It requires less effort. It is the path of least resistance. But when the storm comes, sand cannot hold. A life built on anything other than the words of Christ — on comfort, on reputation, on wealth, on human approval — will not stand when the storm tests it.
The invitation Jesus gives is not complicated. Hear His words. Do them. Build your life on the only foundation that will never shift. The storms will come, but the house will stand. And when the storm passes, you will still be standing on the Rock.
Breathe in: “I hear the words of Jesus.”
Breathe out: “I build my life on the Rock.”
You cannot control the storms that come your way. But you can control what you build on. Today, choose the Rock. Hear the words of Jesus, put them into practice, and trust that when the storms come, you will stand — not because of your strength, but because of whose words you have built your life upon.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I want to build my life on the solid foundation of Your words. I know that storms will come, and I want to be ready. Help me not just to hear what You say, but to do it. When it is costly to obey, give me courage. When the path of obedience is hard, give me strength. I trust that Your words are the only foundation that will hold. Build my life on the Rock. In Your name, Amen.
