Forgive As the Lord Forgave You

Theme Scripture: Colossians 3:13 (WEB)

Reflection

Bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.

Paul gives us one short phrase that transforms forgiveness from a burden into a response: as Christ forgave you.

Everything changes when we stop measuring our forgiveness against how much someone deserves it and start measuring it against how much we have already received. The standard is no longer “Did they earn it?” but “Did I earn what Christ gave me?” And the answer to that question changes everything.

Think about how Christ forgave you. He did not wait for you to apologise enough times. He did not set conditions. He did not say, “I will forgive you once you prove you deserve it.” While we were still sinners — rebellious, indifferent, far from God — Christ died for us. His forgiveness was proactive, costly, and complete. It was given before we asked, while we were still running from Him.

That is the model for our forgiveness of others.

Paul does not pretend this is easy. He acknowledges that there will be complaints — real grievances, genuine hurts. Some people will wound you deeply, and forgiveness will feel like letting them off the hook. But that is precisely where the gospel meets us. The cross did not let us off the hook — it placed the full weight of our sin on Jesus so that we could be free. When we forgive, we are not saying the offence did not matter. We are saying that Christ’s grace matters more.

Forgiveness as Christ forgave you means forgiving before the other person earns it. It means forgiving when they do not deserve it. It means forgiving even when they do not ask for it — not because they are innocent, but because you have been freed from the prison of bitterness. You are not excusing the wrong. You are releasing the debt to God, who alone judges justly.

Does this feel impossible? That is because, in our own strength, it is. But remember — this is not a command to summon forgiveness from within yourself. It is an invitation to let the forgiveness you have already received flow through you. The same grace that saved you is sufficient to help you forgive. You do not need to manufacture it. You need only to stay close to the source.

Closing Prayer

Jesus, thank You for forgiving me when I least deserved it. Teach me to forgive others the same way — not reluctantly, not conditionally, but freely and completely. When I struggle to let go of an offence, remind me of the cross and the grace I did not earn. Help me to release every debt to You. In Your name, Amen.

Gentle Encouragement

You are not asked to forgive because the other person deserves it. You are asked to forgive because Christ forgave you first. That changes everything.
