Forgiveness That Costs

Theme Scripture: Ephesians 4:32 (WEB)

Reflection

Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.

Paul’s instruction is beautiful and challenging. But it raises a question we rarely ask aloud: is forgiveness supposed to cost us something?

The answer is yes. Forgiveness always costs someone something. If it cost nothing, it would not be forgiveness — it would be indifference. Real forgiveness acknowledges that a debt existed, that a wrong was done, and that you are choosing to absorb the cost rather than collect it.

God knows this better than anyone. Forgiveness cost Him everything. The cross was not cheap grace — it was the most expensive transaction in history. God did not simply wave away sin. He poured out His own Son to bear the weight of it. Forgiveness cost Him, and He paid it fully because He loves you.

When we forgive someone who has hurt us, we are following in that costly pattern. We are choosing to absorb the pain rather than pass it on. We are saying, “This hurt is real, and I am choosing to release my right to revenge. I am placing this in God’s hands.”

This is not weakness. It is the hardest, bravest thing you can do. It costs your pride. It costs your right to be angry. It costs the satisfaction of seeing them pay. But it also sets you free.

Notice that Paul does not say “forgive those who deserve it.” He says forgive as Christ forgave you — while you were undeserving, while it was costly, while it was hard. That is the pattern. That is the way of the cross.

If you are struggling to forgive someone today, do not pretend the hurt does not matter. Acknowledge the cost. Bring it to God. Name the pain honestly in prayer. And then — as He did for you — choose to absorb it rather than demand payment. The cost is real, but the freedom on the other side is worth everything. Every time you choose forgiveness, you are walking the way of the cross. And the One who walked it before you walks with you.

Closing Prayer

Father, forgiveness is costly, and I do not always have the strength to offer it. But You gave everything to forgive me, and I want to follow Your example. Help me to release the debts I am holding, even the ones that feel unfair. Take the weight of every offence and give me Your peace in return. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Gentle Encouragement

Forgiveness costs you something. But bitterness costs you everything. Choose the costly path that leads to freedom.
