Forgiveness That Costs — Daily Encouragement

There is no version of forgiveness that is free, and it helps to say that plainly.

To forgive is to absorb a cost someone else created. The debt is not denied, and it is not handed to a third party. It is carried by you, and released, and the release does not undo the loss. That is why bitterness is such a tempting alternative. It keeps the account open and gives you standing. The trouble is that it also keeps you attached to the very person you are trying to be free from, and it charges rent for as long as you hold it. Choose the path that costs you the wound rather than the one that costs you your peace.
