Through him, then, let’s offer up a sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of lips which proclaim allegiance to his name.
The writer of Hebrews closes this letter with a call that brings the whole Christian life into focus: offer a sacrifice of praise to God continually. Not when you feel like it. Not when everything is going well. Continually.
Sacrifice is the thread that runs through this entire week. Gratitude is not always a spontaneous overflow of positive feelings. Often, it is a deliberate offering — something you choose to give even when everything in you wants to complain, withdraw, or despair. That is why it is called a sacrifice.
But notice the foundation of this sacrifice: through him. Through Jesus. Our praise is not rooted in our circumstances but in Christ’s finished work. We can offer praise continually not because life is always good, but because Jesus is always good. He has secured our salvation. He has made us acceptable to God. He intercedes for us. And because of Him, our praise — however weak, however tired, however imperfect — is received as a fragrant offering.
The phrase “fruit of our lips” is beautiful. Praise is the natural produce of a heart that has tasted God’s goodness. When you have truly experienced His grace, gratitude cannot help but find its way to your lips. It may take time. It may feel forced at first. But the fruit will come.
Think of it this way: a tree does not strain to produce fruit. It simply abides in the soil, draws from the roots, and fruit appears in season. The same is true of praise. When you abide in Christ — when you stay connected to Him through prayer, Scripture, and community — praise becomes the natural fruit of your life. Not forced. Not manufactured. Just the overflow of a heart that is rooted in Him.
This is the capstone of a life of gratitude: not just occasional thanks when things go well, but a continual offering of praise — through Jesus, in every season, because He is worthy.
Prayer
Jesus, through You I offer my sacrifice of praise. Not because I always feel like it, but because You are always worthy. Accept my thanksgiving, even when it is weak and tired. Produce in me the fruit of lips that praise Your name continually, in every season of life. Let my life be an offering of gratitude to You. Amen.
Encouragement
A life of gratitude is not built on perfect circumstances — it is built on a perfect Saviour. Through Him, you can offer praise continually. He is worthy.
