For you, brothers, were called for freedom. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love be servants to one another.
Freedom and service — these seem like opposites. If you are free, you are not bound to serve anyone. Yet Paul brings them together in a stunning paradox: you were called to freedom, so use that freedom to serve one another in love.
True Christian freedom is not the freedom to do whatever you want. It is the freedom to love as Christ loved. Before you knew Christ, you were enslaved to sin and selfishness. Your choices revolved around your own desires. But now you are free — free from the tyranny of self-interest, free to choose the good of others, free to love without ulterior motives.
Paul’s warning is important: do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh. Freedom can be twisted into license — permission to indulge ourselves at others’ expense. But that is not freedom; that is a new kind of slavery. True freedom is the power to put love into action.
And notice that Paul does not say “serve one another out of duty.” He says “through love be servants to one another.” The motivation is love, not obligation. When you truly love someone, serving them is not a burden — it is a joy. The same love that Christ poured into your heart becomes the wellspring of your service.
This is the test of our freedom. Are we using it to build ourselves up or to lift others? Do our choices make us more self-centred or more loving? True freedom in Christ always moves us outward — toward God and toward others. It never shrinks us down into smaller, more self-absorbed people. When you find yourself becoming more generous, more patient, more willing to put others first, that is the fruit of genuine freedom.
Who in your life is God calling you to serve today? A family member who needs help? A friend who is struggling? A stranger who crosses your path? Let your freedom find its highest expression in loving service.
Prayer
Father, thank You for the freedom I have in Christ. Teach me to use that freedom not for selfish indulgence, but for loving service. Free me from the grip of self-interest. Fill my heart with genuine love for others, so that serving them becomes a joy and not a duty. Let my life be a demonstration of the freedom that comes through love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Encouragement
You were set free not to serve yourself, but to love others. True freedom is the power to put love into action through service.
