There is a moment in every meaningful journey when talking about it stops and doing it begins. The vision is clear. The heart is stirred. Now comes the choice — will you step forward, or will you look back? The plow is waiting.

*”But Jesus said to him, ‘No one, having put his hand to the plow and looking back, is fit for God’s Kingdom.'”* — Luke 9:62 (WEB)
This verse comes in a series of encounters with people who wanted to follow Jesus — but not quite yet. “First let me bury my father.” “First let me say goodbye to my family.” On the surface, these sound like reasonable requests. But Jesus sees what lies beneath: a divided heart. A foot still in two worlds.
The image of the plow is powerful. A farmer plowing a field cannot afford to look back. If he does, the furrow goes crooked. The work loses its straightness. His eyes must be fixed forward — on the end of the row, on the destination, on the harvest that will come.
Yesterday we stirred our souls awake. Today we take hold of the plow.
This is the commitment day of our journey — the day we say, “I’m not going back.” Not because the past was bad, but because what God has ahead is better. The apostle Paul captured this same resolve: *”Forgetting the things which are behind and stretching forward to the things which are before, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus”* (Philippians 3:13-14).
The first journey established your foundation. You learned to abide, to pray, to trust, to persevere. Now it’s time to build on that foundation. To go deeper. To not just know about intimacy with God — but to live in it every day.
Looking back has a way of paralyzing us. We look back at past failures and think, “I can’t possibly go deeper with God after what I’ve done.” We look back at past successes and think, “That season was better than this one will be.” Both are distractions. Both keep the furrow crooked.
Putting your hand to the plow means choosing focus. It means telling your past — whether glorious or shameful — that it no longer defines your direction. Your eyes are on Christ. Your hands are on the work He has given you. And you are not turning back.
This is not a burden. It is freedom. The freedom of a soul that has finally stopped looking over its shoulder.
