## Opening Reflection
The rearview mirror is small for a reason. When you’re running a race, looking back slows you down. It breaks your stride. It distracts from what’s ahead. And yet, how many of us spend more time looking at where we’ve been than where we’re going? Paul’s words today are an invitation to turn your face forward.

## Devotional
“Brothers, I don’t regard myself as yet having taken hold, but one thing I do: forgetting the things which are behind and stretching forward to the things which are before, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 3:13-14 (WEB)
Paul wrote these words from a Roman prison. He was nearing the end of his life, chained to guards, awaiting trial before Caesar. Most people in his position would be looking backward — remembering better days, regretting past mistakes, wondering what could have been.
But Paul does something remarkable. He refuses to look back.
“One thing I do,” he says. That phrase is charged with determination. Paul had remarkable focus. He knew what mattered, and everything else fell away. He describes it as “forgetting the things which are behind and stretching forward to the things which are before.”
The word “forgetting” here is active, not passive. Paul deliberately chose not to dwell on the past. He didn’t deny it existed. He simply refused to let it define him.
This includes the good past. Paul had reasons to be proud: his education, his zeal, his pedigree as a Pharisee. But he counted all of that as loss for the sake of knowing Christ. Even spiritual accomplishments can become weights if they make us complacent.
And it includes the bad past. Paul had persecuted the church. He had approved of Stephen’s stoning. He had been an enemy of the gospel. Imagine the weight of that memory. But Paul didn’t let his past failures disqualify him. He received God’s forgiveness and moved forward.
“Stretching forward” is a beautiful image. The Greek word *epekteinomenos* suggests a runner straining toward the finish line, leaning forward, every muscle extending, neck craned, eyes fixed ahead. It’s the posture of someone who is not content to coast. Someone who still has fire in their soul.
Paul presses toward the goal. Not passively. Not casually. *Presses.* With effort, intention, and holy determination.
But notice what the goal is. Paul doesn’t say “I press on toward success.” He doesn’t say “I press on toward comfort” or “I press on toward popularity” or “I press on toward building a legacy.” He says, “the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.”
The goal is Christ Himself.
Not what Christ can give you. Not what you can achieve for Christ. *Christ.* Knowing Him. Being conformed to His likeness. Hearing Him say, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
For 81 days now, we have been journeying together through these devotionals. Today is Day 81 of 84. We are so close to the finish line of this 12-week milestone. But this journey was never about completing a reading plan. It was about knowing Christ more deeply.
Whatever is behind you — successes or failures, victories or defeats, mountaintops or valleys — let it go. Stretch forward. Press on. The goal is worth it.

## Closing Reflection
What is behind you that you need to let go of today? A success that made you comfortable? A failure that made you afraid? A season that’s over but you’re still living in? Take a breath, release it, and turn your face forward. The best is yet to come.

## Prayer
Lord Jesus, I want to have Paul’s focus. Help me to forget what lies behind — the things that make me proud and the things that make me ashamed. I want to stretch forward toward You. Not toward accomplishment, not toward recognition, but toward You. You are the prize. You are the goal. Everything else is secondary. Give me holy determination to press on. In Your name, Amen.
