REST IN GOD’S PEACE — DAY 3
When God Is Silent
Main Scripture: Psalm 46:10 (WEB) — “Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.”
Opening Reflection
Silence from heaven can feel like abandonment. We pray. We wait. We pray again. And the heavens feel like brass. But what if God’s silence is not absence but invitation? What if the quiet is where we finally learn to listen — and where we discover that He has been here all along?
Devotional
Psalm 46 was written to people in crisis. The verses before verse 10 describe nations in uproar, kingdoms falling, earthquakes and chaos. The world was shaking. And in the middle of it all, God says: “Be still.”
The Hebrew word for “be still” is raphah — it means to let go, to sink down, to become slack, to surrender. It is the opposite of frantic activity. It is the posture of a child who stops trying to fix everything and simply rests in the Father’s arms.
“Be still, and know” — the stillness comes first. Not understanding, then stillness. Stillness, then deeper knowing. Sometimes God withholds clarity not to frustrate you but to draw you into a deeper dependence. The silence is the classroom of trust.
Here is the truth we must hold onto: God’s silence is never proof of His absence. His presence does not depend on our feelings. He is no less present when we cannot hear Him than when we feel His voice clearly. The same God who spoke the universe into existence also speaks in the quiet — and sometimes, He is most present in the silence.
Consider Joseph. Sold into slavery by his own brothers. Falsely accused. Thrown into prison for doing the right thing. Years passed — a long season of waiting and uncertainty, with no clear end in sight. If anyone had reason to doubt whether God was still with him, it was Joseph. Yet Scripture tells us plainly that “the LORD was with Joseph” (Genesis 39:21). Even when the circumstances looked like abandonment, God had not left him. Every injustice, every delay, every lonely night in prison was part of a plan Joseph could not yet see — a plan to save nations. God was working even when His activity was not immediately visible.
Practical Application
- Ten minutes of stillness: Set aside 10 minutes of complete silence today — no music, no podcast, no phone — and simply sit in God’s presence. Let your mind settle. Breathe slowly. You are not wasting time; you are making space for God.
- Two simple breath prayers to carry with you:
- Breathe in: “Lord, I trust You.” Breathe out slowly.
- Breathe in: “Help me be still before You.” Breathe out slowly.
Repeat these whenever anxiety rises or silence feels uncomfortable. Let them become the rhythm of your soul.
- When you feel tempted to fill the silence with noise, remind yourself: “Stillness is not emptiness. Stillness is readiness.”
- Write down what comes to mind during the silence, even if it feels like nothing. Sometimes the most important thing God gives us in the quiet is simply more of Himself.
Prayer
Lord, forgive me for fearing Your silence. Thank You that Your presence does not depend on what I feel. You are with me even when I cannot hear You — just as You were with Joseph in prison, with David in the wilderness, and with Your Son in Gethsemane. Teach me to be still — truly still — and to know You in the quiet. Help me trust Your heart even when I cannot trace Your hand. Amen.
Reflection Questions
- How do you typically respond when God feels silent?
- What distractions do you use to avoid stillness? What would it look like to set them aside for 10 minutes today?
- Think of Joseph in prison, David waiting for the throne, or Hannah praying year after year. How does their story encourage you in your own waiting season?
