Opening Reflection
Obedience can feel like a heavy word. It brings to mind rules, restrictions, and the fear of getting it wrong. But Jesus redefines obedience entirely. He does not say “if you keep my word, I will love you.” He says “if you love me, you will keep my word.” Obedience is not the path to God’s love. It is the response to it. It is not a duty to be endured, but a love language spoken between the heart of Christ and the heart of His follower.

“If a man loves me, he will keep my word.” — John 14:23
Jesus connects obedience to love. This changes everything. Obedience is not about following rules to earn favour. It is about expressing love to the One who has already given you His favour completely. When you truly love someone, you want to please them. You listen to what they say. You care about what matters to them.
Think about a relationship you treasure. You do not follow that person’s wishes out of fear or duty. You do it because you love them and you want your life to honour them. Obedience to Christ works the same way. It flows naturally from a heart that has been captured by His love.
“My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.” — John 14:23
This is the promise that makes obedience beautiful. When you love Jesus and keep His word, the Father and the Son make their home with you. Not a visit. Not a temporary stay. They take up residence. Your life becomes a dwelling place for God.
Obedience is not about achieving a standard of perfection. It is about creating space for God to live in and through you. Every act of obedience is like opening another room in the house of your heart and saying to the Lord: “This area is Yours. Come and dwell here.”
This reframes how we think about the commands of Christ. His commands are not arbitrary rules. They are invitations to live in a way that allows His presence to fill our lives more fully. When He says forgive, He is not burdening you — He is clearing out the bitterness that blocks His presence. When He says love your enemy, He is not giving you an impossible task — He is making room in your heart for His love to flow through you to others.
Walking in obedience is a daily choice. Some days it will feel natural. Other days it will be a battle. But in every moment, obedience is your loving response to the One who loved you first. And as you obey, you will find that His commandments are not burdensome. They are the path to a life filled with His presence.
Breathe in: “I love You, Lord, so I keep Your word.”
Breathe out: “Make Your home in my heart today.”
You do not obey to be loved. You obey because you are loved. Let your obedience today be not a grudging duty but a joyful response to the grace you have received. And as you obey, you will discover that His presence fills your life in ways you never imagined.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You that I do not have to earn Your love through obedience. You have already loved me completely. Today I choose to keep Your word not as a duty, but as a response to Your love. Help me to see Your commands as invitations to make more room for Your presence in my life. Where obedience is hard, give me strength. Where it is unclear, give me wisdom. Let my life be a home where You dwell. In Your name, Amen.
