Walking in God’s Wisdom — Day 59: Hearing God’s Voice

Opening Reflection

In a world full of noise, learning to hear the voice of God is one of the most important skills of the Christian life. Voices clamour for our attention every day — the voice of the culture, the voice of fear, the voice of comparison, the voice of our own restless thoughts. But Jesus says something remarkable: His sheep hear His voice. Not might hear it, not could hear it if they were spiritual enough. They hear it. It is part of what it means to belong to Him.

Devotional

“My sheep hear my voice.” — John 10:27

Jesus uses the metaphor of a shepherd and his sheep — a familiar image to His original audience. In ancient Israel, shepherds did not drive their sheep from behind. They led from the front, and the sheep followed because they knew the shepherd’s voice. They would not follow a stranger because the stranger’s voice was not familiar to them.

The same is true for you. You belong to Christ. You are His sheep. And because you are His, you can learn to recognise His voice. It may take practice. It may require stillness and attention. But Jesus Himself promises that His sheep hear His voice. This is not about being a special kind of Christian. It is about belonging to the Shepherd and learning, over time, to know when He is speaking.

“I know them.” — John 10:27

Jesus knows you. Not just facts about you — He knows you deeply, personally, intimately. He knows your name, your story, your struggles, your joys. He knows when you are hurting and when you are rejoicing. He knows what you need before you ask. And because He knows you, He speaks to you in ways you can understand.

The shepherd knows each sheep individually. He does not treat them all the same because they are not all the same. One sheep may need gentle guidance, another may need a firm hand. Similarly, God speaks to each of His children in ways that are suited to them. Do not compare how God speaks to you with how He speaks to others. Trust that He knows you, and He knows how to reach your heart.

“And they follow me.” — John 10:27

Hearing and following are connected. The proof that you recognise His voice is that you obey it. Not perfectly, not without stumbling, but with a heart that wants to follow. Jesus does not say “My sheep hear my voice and discuss it among themselves” or “My sheep hear my voice and think about it for a while.” He says they follow.

Following requires trust. It requires stepping out even when you cannot see the whole path. It requires doing what He says even when it does not make sense to your natural mind. But the Shepherd has never led a sheep astray. His voice is trustworthy, and His way is good.

How do you learn to hear His voice? You spend time with Him. You read His Word, because His voice will never contradict what He has already spoken. You practise stillness, because His voice is often quiet. You obey what you already know, because faithfulness in little things leads to greater clarity. And over time, the voice of the Shepherd becomes more familiar, more recognisable, more trusted than all the noise around you.

Breathe in: “I am Your sheep, and I hear Your voice.”
Breathe out: “I choose to follow You today.”

The Shepherd is speaking. He has been speaking all along. The question is not whether God is speaking, but whether we are listening. Today, quiet the noise. Still your heart. And listen. The voice of the Good Shepherd is clearer than you think.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You that I am Your sheep and that You know me by name. Teach me to recognise Your voice above all the noise of the world. Give me ears to hear when You speak through Your Word, through Your Spirit, through the quiet promptings of my heart. And give me courage to follow — not just to hear, but to obey. I trust that wherever You lead, Your way is good. Help me to follow closely today. In Your name, Amen.
