Forgiving Ourselves — Verse of the Day

There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who don’t walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.

Paul writes this sentence at the end of a long argument, and that little word therefore is carrying a great deal of weight. Seven chapters have gone before it, all of them establishing that no one becomes right with God by their own effort. “No condemnation” is not a reward for good behaviour. It is the conclusion of a case that has already been decided.

Notice who it applies to. Not to those who feel forgiven, and not to those who have finally stopped relapsing into the same old failure. It applies to those who are in Christ Jesus. Your standing does not rest on the steadiness of your feelings. It rests on whose you are.

Which makes self-condemnation a very strange thing for a believer to carry. When you refuse to accept God’s verdict, you are not being humble. You are setting your own judgment above His and quietly calling His court unreliable.
