REST IN GOD’S PEACE — DAY 5
Peace in the Middle of the Mess
Main Scripture: John 14:27 (WEB) — “Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, I give to you. Don’t let your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”
Opening Reflection
The world’s version of peace is conditional. No conflict? Peace. Bills paid? Peace. Family stable? Peace. But Jesus offers something different: peace in the conflict, peace while the bills are still unpaid, peace as the family struggles. His peace does not require perfect conditions. It is a gift, offered right where you are — not after everything is fixed.
Devotional
In the upper room, hours before His arrest, Jesus spoke these words to frightened disciples. He knew exactly what was coming — betrayal, denial, execution, confusion. And in that moment, He gave them peace. Not the peace of resolution. Not the peace of everything working out. His peace.
The world’s peace comes from the absence of trouble. Jesus’s peace comes from His presence in the trouble. The difference is everything.
“Not as the world gives, I give to you” — the world’s peace is fragile, dependent on circumstances aligning. Jesus’s peace is robust, rooted in the unchanging reality of who He is and what He has done. It is a peace that coexists with tears, with confusion, with pain. It does not deny reality; it transcends it.
Consider Paul and Silas in Philippi (Acts 16). They had been beaten, thrown into prison, and fastened in stocks. Their situation was dire and getting worse. And yet, at midnight, they were singing hymns and praying. Not after their chains fell off. Before. Their peace came before their circumstances changed. And it was that peace — the peace that praised God in the middle of the mess — that shook the prison doors open.
Perhaps you are facing financial pressure today, and the numbers do not add up. Or family conflict that leaves you heavy-hearted. Maybe illness has drained your strength, or grief has stolen your joy. Uncertainty about the future may be pressing in, or you may be waiting for answers that seem slow in coming. Friend, Jesus does not ask you to pretend these things are not real. He offers you His peace — not after they are resolved, but right in the middle of them. His peace is not the absence of the storm; it is His presence holding you through it.
This is the peace that gives a mother strength at her child’s funeral. The peace that holds a marriage together when everything is falling apart. The peace that allows a believer to sing in prison. It is real. It is available. And it is a gift, not something you must earn.
Practical Application
- Read John 14:27 aloud — slowly: Let the words “Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you” settle into your heart. Speak them over your situation. Let them become your declaration.
- Pause before reacting: In stressful moments, take one breath before responding. Use that pause to silently say: “Jesus, I receive Your peace.” Let His peace inform your response rather than your fear.
- Thank Jesus before circumstances change: Gratitude is an act of trust. Thank Him for His presence and His peace even when you cannot yet see the resolution. Your thanksgiving is not denial — it is faith.
- Choose trust over fear — one step at a time: You do not need to have everything figured out. You only need to take the next step with Him. Peace is not the absence of the storm; it is His presence holding you through it.
- Two simple breath prayers to carry with you:
- Breathe in: “Jesus, I receive Your peace.” Breathe out slowly.
- Breathe in: “My heart rests in You.” Breathe out slowly.
Repeat these whenever your heart begins to feel troubled. Let them be the rhythm that anchors you back to His presence.
Prayer
Jesus, I don’t need my circumstances to be perfect to receive Your peace. Today, I release my grip on the need to have everything figured out. Give me the peace that passes understanding — not after the storm passes, but right here in the middle of the mess. Teach me to praise You before I see the breakthrough, just as Paul and Silas sang before their chains fell off. My heart rests in You. Amen.
Reflection Questions
- Are you waiting for your situation to improve before you allow yourself to experience peace? What would it look like to receive His peace right where you are?
- Think of Paul and Silas singing in prison — their peace came before their circumstances changed. How does that challenge or encourage you in what you are facing today?
- What would change in your daily life if you truly believed that Jesus’s peace is not the absence of the storm but His presence holding you through it?
