The Joy of Obedience

WALKING WITH JESUS • DAY 19

The Joy of Obedience

Main Scripture: John 14:15 (WEB)

“If you love me, keep my commandments.”

— John 14:15 (WEB)

Opening Reflection

The word ‘obedience’ does not always sit comfortably with us. It sounds restrictive. It sounds like rules, boundaries, and the opposite of freedom. We associate obedience with childhood — with being told what to do by someone who does not understand.

But Jesus reframes obedience entirely. He does not say, ‘Keep my commandments because I said so.’ He says, ‘If you love Me, keep My commandments.’ Obedience, in the kingdom of God, is not the path to earning love. It is the expression of receiving it.

This changes everything. Suddenly obedience is not a burden to be endured. It is an act of love to be offered.

Devotional

Jesus connects obedience to love eight times in John’s gospel alone. He is not building a system of religious rule-keeping. He is inviting us into a relationship where love is the motivation and obedience is the natural response.

Think of it this way: when you truly love someone, you want to please them. You pay attention to what matters to them. You adjust your behaviour not because you are forced to, but because their heart matters to you. A husband does not remain faithful to his wife because the law says he must. He remains faithful because he loves her. The obedience flows from the relationship.

This is what Jesus is inviting us into. He is not asking for cold compliance. He is asking for loving response. His commandments are not arbitrary rules designed to restrict our joy. They are signposts pointing us toward the life we were created to live. When He says ‘love your enemies,’ He is not taking something from you — He is protecting you from the bitterness that unforgiveness creates. When He says ‘seek first the kingdom,’ He is not demanding sacrifice — He is offering freedom from anxiety.

And here is the beautiful surprise: obedience, when it flows from love, produces joy. Not the shallow happiness of getting what you want, but the deep, abiding joy of living in alignment with your Creator. Jesus said, ‘If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and remain in his love. I have spoken these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full’ (John 15:10–11).

Obedience is not the enemy of joy. It is the pathway into it.

Practical Application

• Identify one command of Jesus that you have been resisting. Ask yourself honestly: is my resistance rooted in fear, comfort, or misunderstanding? Bring it to Jesus in prayer.

• This week, practice one act of obedience as an act of love. Before you do it, say: “Jesus, I am doing this because I love You.” Notice how the motivation changes the experience.

• Read John 15:1–17 in one sitting. Circle every time Jesus mentions love, obedience, and joy. Notice how they are connected.

Breath Prayer

Lord Jesus, I choose to obey not out of duty but out of love. Show me where obedience leads to deeper joy.

Closing Reflection

Obedience is not God’s way of holding you back. It is His way of holding you close. Every command He gives is an invitation to remain in His love — and there is no safer, more joyful place to be. As we walk with Him day by day, obedience becomes less about obligation and more about becoming like the One we love.

Prayer

Father, I confess that I have sometimes seen Your commandments as restrictions rather than invitations. Change my heart. Help me to see obedience as an expression of love, not a burden to carry. I want to follow You not because I have to, but because I love You. Let my joyful obedience be a witness to Your goodness. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Reflection Questions

1. Is there an area of your life where you find it difficult to obey God? What makes it hard?

2. How might your view of obedience change if you saw it as an act of love rather than a list of rules?

3. Can you recall a time when obeying God led to unexpected joy or peace? What did that experience teach you?
