Walking in Wisdom

LIVING BY THE SPIRIT — DAY 26

Walking in Wisdom

Main Scripture: James 3:17 (WEB)

“But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceful, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.”

— James 3:17 (WEB)

Opening Reflection

We live in an age of information. We know more facts than any generation before us, and yet wisdom seems as scarce as ever.

Knowledge tells you what is true. Wisdom tells you what to do with it. And the wisdom that truly matters does not come from universities — it comes from above.

Devotional

James gives us a beautiful portrait of heavenly wisdom. It is practical, relational, and deeply rooted in the character of God.

Pure. Untainted by selfish motives. Seeks what is right before what is convenient. Peaceful. Pursues peace without compromising truth. Gentle. Speaks the truth in love. Reasonable. Open to reason, willing to listen. Full of mercy and good fruits. Compassionate and productive. Without partiality. Treats everyone fairly. Without hypocrisy. Genuine through and through.

Compare this with the wisdom of the world. James writes, “Where jealousy and selfish ambition are, there is confusion and every evil deed” (James 3:16). The world’s wisdom is driven by self-interest, competition, and pride.

How do we walk in heavenly wisdom? It begins with the fear of the Lord (Proverbs 1:7). When we fear God, we stop fearing what others think.

Walking in wisdom also requires humility. James says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally” (James 1:5). Wisdom is a gift. We receive it by asking, by seeking, by acknowledging that we need it.

A humble heart is always teachable. As we continue to seek God, He faithfully shapes our decisions and helps us reflect His character in everyday life.

And finally, walking in wisdom requires the Spirit — the Spirit of wisdom and revelation (Ephesians 1:17).

Practical Application

  • Before making any significant decision, pause and ask: “Is this pure, peaceful, gentle, reasonable, merciful, impartial, and genuine?”
  • Read one chapter of Proverbs each day this week.
  • When you face a conflict, choose the way of peace and gentleness.

Breath Prayer

Breathe in: “Lord, I need Your wisdom.”
Breathe out: “Give me wisdom from above.”

Closing Reflection

The world applauds cleverness, but God honours wisdom. Heavenly wisdom is about living well — purely, peacefully, gently, mercifully, genuinely. Ask God for wisdom. He gives generously.

Prayer

Father, You are the source of all wisdom. I confess that I often rely on my own understanding. Give me wisdom from above — pure, peaceful, gentle, reasonable, merciful, impartial, and genuine. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Reflection Questions

  1. Think of a recent decision. Did you seek wisdom from above or rely on your own understanding?
  2. Which quality of heavenly wisdom do you most need to grow in right now?
  3. What would change if you sought God’s wisdom before making decisions?
