Closer Than You Imagine

God has never been distant. Through Christ, He has always been inviting us into friendship. He is closer than we can imagine.

Opening Reflection

Devotional

There is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. — Proverbs 18:24 (WEB)

You are my friends, if you do whatever I command you. No longer do I call you servants, for the servant doesn’t know what his lord does. But I have called you friends, for everything that I heard from my Father, I have made known to you. — John 15:14-15 (WEB)

The journey of drawing near brings us to this stunning destination: friendship with God.

Think about the weight of what Jesus says. “I have called you friends.” Not servants, who obey without understanding. Not subjects, who follow from a distance. Friends. Those who know what the Master is doing. Those who are trusted with His heart.

This is the goal of all the drawing near we’ve been practicing. Not just access. Not just intimacy. Friendship. The kind of closeness where you don’t have to explain yourself because you are known. The kind of relationship where silence is comfortable because presence is enough.

Proverbs 18:24 tells us there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. Family by blood can be close, but Jesus — the friend who sticks closer — is bound to us not by bloodline but by His own blood. He chose us. He laid down His life for His friends.

If you’ve been striving this week to draw nearer, you may end today realising something beautiful: He’s already near. Incredibly near. As close as a friend who knows your name, your story, your struggles. As close as the One who calls you friend.

This doesn’t diminish His holiness or His majesty. It magnifies His grace. The holy God, the King of kings, the One who tore the veil and opened the way — He doesn’t just tolerate your presence. He delights in it. He calls you friend.

Let that sink in. The God of the universe knows you by name and wants to be known by you. Not just worshipped. Not just obeyed. Known. As a friend knows a friend.

The invitation of this whole week — and indeed this whole journey — culminates here. You were awakened to stir your soul. Now you’ve been invited near, only to discover that He has been near all along. Closer than you ever imagined.

Closing Reflection

What does it mean to you personally that Jesus calls you friend? How would your daily life change if you truly lived from that reality?

Prayer

Jesus, thank You. You don’t call me servant. You call me friend. I don’t fully understand why the God of the universe would want friendship with me, but I receive it with a grateful heart. Help me live today in the reality of Your closeness. I am known. I am loved. I am Yours. Amen.
