The Secret Place

From occasional visits to abiding. He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High rests in the shadow of the Almighty.

Devotional

He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. — Psalm 91:1 (WEB)

The word dwell changes everything. The psalmist doesn’t say “he who visits” or “he who stops by occasionally.” He says dwells — the Hebrew word yashab, meaning to sit, to remain, to inhabit. It’s the word used for someone living in their home.

The secret place is not a physical location — a prayer closet or a mountain retreat (though those can help). It’s a spiritual reality. A place of intimate communion with God that you carry with you wherever you go. It’s the awareness that you are always in His presence, always under His shadow.

This builds on what we explored in Week 5 about abiding in Christ. Abiding is remaining connected to the vine. Dwelling in the secret place takes that further — it’s making your home in God. It’s not just drawing near occasionally; it’s taking up residence.

There’s a progression in this week’s journey that leads here: The invitation (Day 92) called you to come. Sincerity (Day 93) cleared the way. The torn veil (Day 94) showed the door is open. Boldness (Day 95) gave you confidence to enter. Stillness (Day 96) taught you to be present. And now, dwelling — making this your lifestyle.

The shadow of the Almighty is not a distant shade but a close covering, like a mother bird covering her young. To rest in that shadow is to live under divine protection, not just in moments of crisis but as a continuous state of being. It’s peace that doesn’t depend on circumstances because it’s rooted in presence.

How do you dwell in the secret place? You start with the posture of your heart. Throughout your day — while working, driving, doing chores — you practice turning your attention to God. A whispered prayer. A moment of gratitude. A breath of awareness that He is with you.

The secret place is not exclusive. It’s not reserved for mystics or monastics. It’s home, and the door is always open. Come in and stay.

Closing Reflection

Is your relationship with God more like visiting or dwelling? What would it look like to make your home in His presence today?

Prayer

Lord, I want to do more than visit Your presence. I want to dwell there. Teach me to live in the secret place, to rest in Your shadow throughout every part of my day. Make my life a continuous awareness of Your nearness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
