Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. — James 4:8 (WEB)
This verse is an invitation wrapped in a promise. It doesn’t begin with “cleanse your hands” or “purify your hearts” — though those follow. It begins with the audacious, tender truth that you are invited to come close to the God who made the heavens.
Think about what James is saying. Not “draw near to God, and maybe He’ll notice you.” Not “try hard enough and He might turn His head.” No — “draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” The God of the universe, the One who holds galaxies in place, responds to your approach with His own approach. He moves toward you when you move toward Him.
This is the heartbeat of all spiritual life. Before any rule, any discipline, any effort at holiness — there is an invitation. God doesn’t hide behind a veil waiting for you to earn your way in. He tore the veil (but that’s a story for Day 94). For now, just know this: He wants you close.
The awakened soul — the one who has stirred from slumber and recognised that there is more to life than the ordinary — hears this invitation as fresh air. You’ve been woken up. Now come closer. The door is open. The welcome mat is out. The Father’s arms are wide.
Drawing near isn’t complicated. It doesn’t require a perfectly worded prayer or a quiet room with the right lighting. It’s a turn of the heart. A whispered, “Jesus, I want to be close to You.” A moment of stillness where you set down your burdens and simply come. He meets you there.
If you’ve felt distant lately — distracted, dry, unsure — know this: the distance you feel is not because He moved. He’s right where He’s always been, waiting with the same open invitation. James 4:8 isn’t a command for the already-holy. It’s a promise for the one who dares to take a step closer.
Today, take that step. Just one. He’s already stepping toward you.
