Drawing near to God doesn’t require perfection — it requires honesty. Come with a sincere heart, not a perfect one.
Opening Reflection
Devotional
Let’s draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and having our body washed with pure water. — Hebrewes 10:22 (WEB)
The writer of Hebrews is giving us the inside secret to approaching God: sincerity. Not sinlessness. Not impressive spirituality. A true heart — the honest, unfiltered, genuine you.
Think about the word sincere. It comes from the idea of something being without wax — in the ancient world, dishonest craftsmen would hide cracks in pottery with wax, only for the flaw to be exposed in the heat. A sincere vessel is one you can hold up to the light and see straight through. No hidden cracks. No wax filling in the gaps.
That’s what God wants. Not a flawless life, but an honest heart. He already sees the cracks anyway. He already knows where the wax is. The invitation to draw near isn’t an invitation to pretend. It’s an invitation to stop pretending.
“Full assurance of faith” is the confidence that comes not from how good you are, but from how good He is. You don’t come with your own righteousness clutched in your hands. You come because Jesus opened the way, and His righteousness covers you. That’s the assurance — not in you, but in Him.
What does it look like to draw near with a sincere heart today? Maybe it means showing up in prayer and saying, “Lord, I’m distracted and tired, but here I am.” Maybe it means admitting the doubt you’ve been suppressing. Maybe it means confessing the sin you’ve been rationalising instead of hiding it behind religious activity.
The sprinkled conscience matters here. A clean conscience — one washed by the blood of Christ — is the foundation for boldness. Not a perfect record, but a forgiven one. When you know you’re forgiven, you stop hiding. When you stop hiding, you can come close.
So come. Not as you should be, but as you are. God can handle your honesty. In fact, He’s waiting for it.
Closing Reflection
##
What have you been hiding from God that you could be honest about today? What would it feel like to bring it into the light and let His grace meet you there?
Prayer
##
Lord, I’ve been hiding. I’ve been pretending I have it together when I don’t. Today I come with a sincere heart — honest about my struggles, grateful for Your grace. Thank You that I don’t need to be perfect to draw near. Wash my heart, renew my mind, and let me rest in Your forgiveness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
