Drawing near to God requires quieting. Not doing, but being. Be still, and know that He is God.
Opening Reflection
Devotional
Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth. — Psalm 46:10 (WEB)
This verse is not a suggestion. It’s a command wrapped in an invitation. “Be still” — the Hebrew word raphah means to let go, to sink down, to become weak. It’s the opposite of striving, of grasping, of trying to control everything.
Drawing near to God requires a quieting of the soul. Not the quiet of an empty room, but the quiet of a heart that has stopped trying to earn, prove, and control. It’s the quiet of a child resting against their mother’s chest, no longer restless, simply present.
Psalm 46 was written in a context of chaos. The verses before speak of mountains shaking, waters roaring, kingdoms tottering. Everything unstable. Everything uncertain. And into that chaos comes the command: Be still. Know.
Know what? Know that He is God. Not that you are. That He is in control when everything feels out of control. That He will be exalted — His purposes will stand — whether you manage to hold it all together or not.
This stillness is not passive resignation. It’s active trust. You deliberately lay down your burdens. You choose to stop trying to be God. You let go of the weight you were never meant to carry.
Drawing near requires this kind of quiet. You can’t draw close to someone while your mind is racing through your to-do list. You can’t hear His whisper if you’re shouting your own prayers over the noise of your anxiety.
Today, practice stillness. Find a place — even if it’s just five minutes — where you stop doing and start being. Breathe. Let your shoulders drop. Let the frantic pace of your thoughts slow down. And in that quiet, simply know: He is God. You are not. And that is good news.
Closing Reflection
When was the last time you were completely still before God — no agenda, no prayer list, no distractions? What would it take to create space for that today?
Prayer
Lord, my soul is restless. I carry so much that I was never meant to carry. Today I choose to be still. I let go of striving. I quiet my heart. Help me to know — really know — that You are God. That You are in control. That I can rest in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
